Signal Specialties, Inc., a subsidiary of Herzog Technologies, Inc., is currently seeking a Signal Foreman in Sanford, Florida.

 

The Signal Foreman is a supervisory position responsible for overseeing and directing a crew consisting of Laborers, Assistant Signalmen, and Signalmen, that perform physical labor at railroad signal projects. In addition to supervising in the installation and repair of railroad signal and communication structures and components.

Travel Requirements:

 

    Travel is required with time away from home.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

    Duties include, but are not limited to;

        Oversees in the installation and repair of railroad signal and communication structures and components.

        Ensure the overall supervision of all onboard crew members. This includes job instructions, training, evaluations and accident investigations when necessary.

        Construct forms and foundations for signal equipment, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

        Supervises and assists in the installation of signal/communication structures and components.

        Lubricate moving parts on mechanical equipment such as switch machines.

        Set up barricades to isolate potentially dangerous situations.

        Prepare and paint signal equipment.

        Install, inspect, test, repair, and maintain signal, train control, and electrical equipment.

        Provide contractor support as directed.

        Load and unload supplies, dig holes and trenches for cable, climb poles and signal masts. Handle cable and wire to make electrical connections.

        Use non-power tools (shovels, picks, axes, sledgehammers); high precision measuring tools (micrometers, voltmeters, amp meters, recorders); hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, tape measurers); power tools (drills, wrenches, power saws).

        Cleans and maintains work areas.

 

Education

 

    High School Diploma or equivalent.

 

Pre-Employment Requirements:

 

    Pass and maintain e-RAILSAFE pre-employment background check and safety certification (as mandated by Herzog’s Railroad customers).

    Employees/applicants can be denied access to the railroad property if they have:

        A felony conviction in the last 7 years.

        An active warrant or open court case.

        A fraud alert and/or your release from incarceration within the last 5 years and/or a history of misdemeanors or crimes of concern.

    Maintain valid driver’s license.

    Pass a motor vehicle report review and be able to meet Herzog’s driving policy (no major driving violations in the previous 3 years).

    Pass Pre-employment drug screening.

    Pass Pre-employment physical and medical evaluation.

    Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

 

Experience/Requirements:

 

    Valid driver’s license required; Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required. (Signal Foremen must secure a CDL within 90 days of hire date or promotion date. Exceptions must be approved by VP Field Operations)

    Must be able to cover travel expenses (if required) until 1st paycheck is processed (approximately 7-10 days after start date).

    Railroad experience preferred.

    Experience using volt/OHM meters preferred.

    Understand electrical and mechanical drawings.

    Preferred past electrical/communication background.

    Mechanical comprehension and experience interpreting schematics and diagrams preferred.

    Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

    Good communication skills and the ability to work well with others.

    Previous construction training or experience preferred.

    Must provide steel toe boots (safety vest, glasses and hardhat provided).

    Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.

    Must be reliable, organized, and flexible.

    Must submit daily activity logs.

    Ability to work on a computer daily to complete tasks.

    Communicate effectively, both orally and written.

    Experience with Word and Excel.

    Basic email etiquette.

 

Working Conditions:

 

    The physical demands described below, must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This position will be physically demanding at times.

    Work in extreme all-weather conditions; uneven surfaces; safety sensitive work environment.

    Able to walk on uneven surfaces over sometimes great distances; frequently climb on/off equipment; climb ladders frequently.

    Use hands to perform activities involving grasping, turning, holding, and pulling.

    Able to visually distinguish colors- red, blue, green, yellow; hear and distinguish auditory signals.

    Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery; bend, walk, stand and sit for extended time; and use hand tools.

    Exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly.
