Job Summary 

As a Ramp Operator you will be responsible for driving and transporting gondolas with trash and recycling. Using heavy machinery and driving is an essential function of this position.

Essential Functions 

  • Pick up trash from bins around the airport. 

  • Operate a machine that tilts 55-gallon drum back & lifts filled bag out to toss into the back of a truck. 

  • Spreading sand around designated areas of the airport. 

  • Collecting gondola equipment and sand spreading equipment. 

  • Cleaning specified areas with brooms and various cleaning equipment. 

  • Recycling materials & trash tossed into large bins or compactors. 

  • Periodically pick up boxes of janitorial supplies for delivery to site janitorial. 

  • Operator may need to move or transport gondolas filled with trash bags that have been transferred by janitorial from inside the terminals. 

  • Recycling materials & trash tossed into large bins or compactors. 

  • Drive on the ramp at the airport. Occasionally power washing and deicing. 

Knowledge and Skills 

  • Proper understanding of various safety signs, warning lights, and proximity to moving vehicles and aircraft. 

  • Must have good listening and verbal communication skills. 

  • Some positions require the ability to speak English. 

  • Awareness of the appropriate safety procedures. 

  • 40 hours of training hauling trash. 

  • Must complete a training on how to drive on a ramp for 20 hours. 

  • Training for 20 hours on a tractor. 

  • Train for 12 hours on a sweeper. 

  • Train for 20 hours on FOD BOSS. 

  • Work with a co-worker for 80 hours before working by themselves. 

Education and Work Experience 

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred 

  • 1-3 years of experience in commercial facilities and building maintenance. 

Work Environment 

  • Small-to-large office environment. 

  • Safety glasses required while performing certain tasks. 

  • Fast paced work environment. 

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. 

  • Exposed to a combination of normal office type environments and shop environments. 

  • Regularly exposed to dust, odors, oil, fumes, and noise. 

  • Driving for 4-8 hours a day. 

Requirements 

Must have a valid driver’s license and possess and maintain a good driving record. 

Physical Demands 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk or hear. Physical requirements include stooping, standing, climbing and frequent lifting of a minimum of 40 lbs. of office and facilities equipment. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Some sitting while driving vehicles such as tugs. Ongoing grasping of brooms, trash barrels, etc. Pushing/pulling of gondolas and sand spreading equipment. Some hand/wrist rotation may occur while turning the steering wheel of a tug.
