Career Advisor/Navigator 

Rubicon transforms communities by equipping East Bay residents to break the cycle of poverty. We believe community transformation is best accomplished when led by residents themselves, and our program offers participants the opportunity to become change agents in their community. 
 
Rubicon is growing and we're is excited to launch a new partnership with Roots Community Health Center, an organization that has successfully equipped formerly incarcerated people for stability. We are collaborating to guide participants through the next steps up their socio-economic ladders, providing individualized coaching, career advising, and access to and support through a college education. We will leverage our robust employer engagement capacity to develop job leads, place people into living-wage employment, and provide ongoing retention support. We will address the legal barriers that may otherwise prevent economic mobility, while equipping people to develop a financial safety net to buffer a setback as life’s challenges emerge. Our integrated, whole person supports will move people from low-wage jobs to full economic participation, leveraging our experience in equipping formerly incarcerated people to achieve stability across all four areas of Income, Assets, Wellness, and Community Connections. 

Located at the ROOTS Program in Oakland, the Career Navigator assists program participants with the process of making informed career and education decisions leading to full-time career oriented employment and economic mobility. The Career Navigator uses a variety of career assessment tools and personality inventories and engaging in occupational exploration and planning exercises through group and individualized services to help participants identify a career pathway. This is a full-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Director of Community Based Programs. Pay rate is between $25-$27/hour, depending on experience and certification. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Assessments and Goal Setting: Review employment, educational and training backgrounds with program participants, administer and interpret standardized career assessment tools and personality inventories and from these, help participants develop their education and career goals 

  • Partnerships: Build and maintain robust partnerships with partner organizations as well as additional organizations offering degrees, credentials, and/or skills training for competitive employment in the local labor market as well as coordinate transitional employment opportunities. This includes evaluating and monitoring training, education and entrepreneurial programs for relevancy and effectiveness and acting as liaison between these providers, program staff and participants as necessary 

  • Career Planning and Guidance: Help participants identify pathways to career-oriented employment at or above the self-sufficiency wage standard and help them select, and apply for college, certification programs , vocational or entrepreneurial training opportunities 

  • Coaching: Provide individual coaching and conduct group workshops in furtherance of individual participant career and education needs. (The ability and willingness to deliver honest, productive feedback and to motivate will be critical to effectiveness) 

  • Monitor Contractual Goals: Support achievement of the programs outcome goals, productivity targets, and all other performance metrics; support reporting; progress against program goals & objectives 

 
COMPETENCIES 

  • Comprehensive career advising/coaching experience and expertise; Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) or Nationally Certified Counselor certification highly desirable 

  • Active listening, critical thinking, and the ability to Inspire and motivate others 

  • Teamwork, interpersonal flexibility, excellent organizational and communication skills 

  • Technology; Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Knowledge of computerized career assessments and software and experience with online LMI resources preferred 

  • Cultural Responsiveness and an alignment with our values and commitment to equity and inclusion 

  • If you don’t currently possess our organizational core competencies of Trauma Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing, and Coaching, Rubicon provides necessary training 

This position requires the incumbent to travel efficiently throughout the East Bay. If incumbent opts to meet these travel requirements by driving, proof of a valid and current driver license, current auto insurance, and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report are required.
